RMM vs EDR: what is the difference, and why do you need both?
RMM operates endpoints. EDR detects and responds to endpoint threats. They can share devices, agents, alerts, and response workflows, but neither category safely replaces the other.

The shortest useful distinction
An RMM helps technicians keep authorized endpoints healthy and supported. An EDR helps security teams identify malicious or suspicious behavior, investigate what happened, and contain or remediate an incident. Operational access is not threat detection, and threat detection is not routine endpoint management.
Primary purpose
RMM: Operate and support authorized endpoints: health, inventory, patching, scripts, automation, and technician access.
EDR: Detect, investigate, contain, and help remediate suspicious endpoint behavior and security incidents.
Signals and alerts
RMM: Operational signals such as service state, disk capacity, resource use, patch status, and custom conditions.
EDR: Security telemetry such as suspicious processes, behavior chains, persistence, lateral movement, and malicious indicators.
Patching and maintenance
RMM: Schedules, approves, deploys, and reports operating-system or supported application updates as an IT workflow.
EDR: May identify exposure or vulnerable software, but it is not automatically the system that owns patch deployment and maintenance windows.
Response actions
RMM: Runs approved scripts, restarts services, changes configuration, and gives technicians remote operational access.
EDR: Supports security investigation and actions such as host isolation, process termination, quarantine, or rollback where the product provides them.
Evidence
RMM: Shows device state, alert history, patch results, technician activity, automation results, and operational reports.
EDR: Preserves security telemetry, detections, incident timelines, investigation context, and response evidence.
What it does not replace
RMM: Does not replace EDR, antivirus, MDR, a SIEM, backup, identity protection, or a security operations process.
EDR: Does not replace fleet maintenance, general remote support, routine patch operations, or the full RMM technician workflow.
Choose RMM first
The immediate gap is endpoint operations
You already have appropriate endpoint protection, but lack health monitoring, patch evidence, repeatable maintenance, inventory, or controlled remote support.
Choose EDR first
The immediate gap is threat detection and response
You cannot reliably detect, investigate, contain, and respond to endpoint threats. Do not treat scripts, alerts, or remote access as a substitute.
Use both
Operations and security are separate responsibilities
The normal design is complementary: EDR owns endpoint threat detection and response while RMM owns routine operations. Define the handoff when either tool finds a problem.
Nizlo scope
Nizlo is an RMM—not an EDR, MDR, or antivirus replacement.
Nizlo is built for monitoring, alerts, patching, automation, remote operations, inventory, and reporting on authorized endpoints. Keep suitable endpoint protection and a documented security response process beside it. Validate compatibility, exclusions, privileges, and escalation paths with both vendors before expanding a deployment.
